THE CANYON OF ŞAHINDERESI
The Canyon of Şahinderesi is a 27 km long gorge with a depth of 1000 metres in places. In this unique paradise you can participate in guided jeep, safari or hiking tours, in an idyllic environment with lots of small lakes, where you can hear nothing but the sound of waters gently flowing and birds singing all day long. In these lakes nourished by fresh waters springing out of the depths on the Mount of Kaz, you can refresh yourself and relieve the stress of everyday life, smelling the scents of flowers and thymes. The fresh song sung by various lakes, large and small, will accompany you in your hiking tours along the trails by the canyon. Thus you will not realise how the time flows in an ambience that builds your appetite. On a pathway at the upper side of the canyon, you take a break behind the biggest and most modern Asthma Hospital in the world and view the dance of the green and blue, while inhaling this marvellous alpine air. For this reason, the air in Altınoluk that is located in one of the richest regions in the world in terms of oxygen content ranking second after the Swiss Alps has healing qualities for asthma disease.
HASANBOĞULDU WATERFALL
To reach the locality of Zeytinli, a typical Aegean township, one turns towards the north at the signboard indicating the direction on the road between Edremit and Akçay. When one further drives following the signboards towards the north from Zeytinli, one reaches the National Park area of Sarıkız. Turning left and further following the signboards, after 4-5 km one reaches the Waterfall of Sutüven and the Small Lake of Hasan Boğuldu (literally Hasan drowned here). It is located in a spot on the Kaz Mount offering an impressive scenery and panorama. It is a picnic place with a small creek, running all the year round though with less waters in summer and wooden picnic tables in and on the banks of the creek, a refreshing place in the heart of verdant nature, with waters running out of a small source, waterfall and a small lake. The road ends here, but one can hike here on the hiking trail that runs parallel to the creek.
The Legend of Hasan Boğuldu
According to the legend, Emine, a maiden from a local tribe and Hasan, a boy dwelling in the lowlands, fall in love with each other and wish to get married. But the tradition does not allow it and the Council of Older People decides that the boy should undergo a test. Pursuant to the decision of the council, the boy has to carry a sack with 50 kilo of salt up on to the peak of the mount without a break. Because the maiden herself can carry such a sack from the lowlands up to the top of the mountain without taking a break, so the decision of elderly people. The boy takes the sack on his back and hits the road towards the top. However, under the heat of the sun, he sweats like hell and the sack inflicts deep wounds on his back. At half way up he has no more hope to reach the summit and commits suicide, plunging into the small lake. Not having heard from him for a long time, Emine goes to the small lake where she finds the kerchief she had given him. Feeling abandoned, she hangs herself at the tree by the bank of the creek with the kerchief.
KAZ MOUNT
In terms of oxygen density, Kaz Mount, the Mount of Ida in ancient times, is the second place in the world after the Alp Mountains. It is known as the place where the first-ever beauty contest in the world was held.
With its historical and natural beauties, geographical location and geological structure, Kaz Mount and the surrounding region has had an enchanting effect on humans for thousands of years. THE ANTIQUE CITY OF ASSOS IN BEHRAMKALE
At Altıner Hotel with a location just by the sea, you can enjoy the sea and the sun, while you can also visit various natural, historical and cultural sites in the neighbourhood. The most important of these sites is the town of Behramkale at a distance of 25 km from Altıner Hotel that hosts the antique city of Assos.
Behramkale which once hosted Aristotle and his Academy and was an Episcopal Centre during the Byzantine Era looks back to a history that dates back four thousand years. With hundred- year-old stone houses, antique port, pension houses offering a warm ambience, blue flag beaches of Kadırga and Eden, it is a tourist area where the nature and history as well as the mountains and the sea are intertwined one with the other.
The streets meandering to the upper town in Behramkale lead us to the Acropolis of Assos at a height of 238 m from the sea level. The Temple of Athena at the Acropolis dates back to the 6th century B.C. The Bohemian spirit at the antique port that is situated in a protected area takes one a few hundred years back.
